Language Proficiency Requirements in Brazil: what actually matters to know

Most employers require at least basic communication skills. While obtaining a work visa is possible, it typically depends on having a job offer from a Brazilian company willing to sponsor it. The salary expectations should also be realistic; even for skilled labor, wages in Brazil can be significantly lower than in many other countries. For instance, a construction worker might earn around $2,000 USD per month, which is considered a good income in Brazil but may be below expectations for foreigners. Job searching platforms specific to Brazil should be explored, but language proficiency remains a primary barrier.

While some goods may be cheaper than in Russia, rent is a significant expense. Finding well-paying work without Portuguese proficiency is difficult, especially for unskilled labor. Many expats find it challenging to live comfortably on local wages compared to their home countries, unless they have remote work or a high-demand skill. Basic communication might suffice for informal jobs, but official employment, especially in tourist areas, will benefit greatly from good Portuguese or even English skills. Some tourist-focused towns specifically seek English speakers. Bringing your own tools is also advisable.
