Train Services: how it works in Sri Lanka — first-hand
Short answer
Sri Lanka's most scenic rail routes, such as the Badulla-Ella line, offer the best views when sitting on the left side of the train. While reserved seats guarantee comfort, unreserved tickets in 2nd and 3rd class are readily available but often result in overcrowding during peak periods.
From real experience
Sri Lanka has some of Asia's most scenic railway routes, primarily in the central highlands (e.g., Badulla-Ella).
Coastal routes like Unawatuna-Galle are short (approx. 15 minutes) and less scenic. Trains, especially on popular routes during peak hours or weekends, can be very crowded, with passengers often standing or sitting on the floor. Traveling with infants or small children on such routes may not be comfortable due to overcrowding.

Sri Lankan trains offer both reserved and unreserved tickets.
1st class always requires booking in advance and has closed windows due to AC. 2nd and 3rd classes usually feature open doors and windows. Note that 2nd class has two separate schemes: unreserved (cheap, tickets are always available, but you might have to stand) and reserved (guarantees a specific seat, must be booked in advance).

Not all trains passing through Ella cross the Nine Arch Bridge.
The route between Badulla and Ambewela is currently active. For the best views towards Ella, sit on the left side of the train. Tickets for the 2nd class should be purchased at the station approximately one hour before departure, as window seats are highly competitive.
