In tourist areas like Madiha and Bentota, many dogs are sterilized and regularly fed by tourists and locals, making them generally friendly. However, caution is advised as some dogs, especially those unaccustomed to human care or in less developed areas, may bite if provoked (e.g., stepped on, startled) or during feeding frenzies. Walking in unlit areas at night can be risky due to potential dog conflicts. While serious incidents are rare, awareness of potential risks like rabies is important. It is generally recommended not to feed street dogs from hands to avoid unpredictable behavior. Local attitudes towards dogs vary; some communities actively care for them (e.g., feeding, vet visits), while others may treat them with less affection or fear.

They can steal food items like cookies, coffee with milk, or anything edible left unattended. They often work in groups, with one distracting and others snatching food. Visitors should be cautious and not leave food unprotected, particularly in hotel areas or on beaches.

Recommended treatments include AstroCort ointment, local menthol cooling oils, and antihistamines like Loratadine. Prevention: use Odomos cream. Distinguish from marine stings by checking for puncture points or inflammation.

They are sometimes captured and relocated to nearby abandoned areas. Monitor lizards are also common near rivers and water bodies. Be aware of your surroundings, especially near water, as boat traffic can pose a risk to wildlife.

While they can be found in certain coastal areas, interacting with them in the water is illegal and subject to enforcement.
