Wowpass Guide in South Korea: what actually matters to know

Wowpass can be topped up using Yuan (from ₩100 bills) via machines, but direct exchange rates might be unfavorable. Exchanging Yuan to KRW at bureaus before loading onto Wowpass is recommended. Some machines accept cards for top-ups, though these are less common and not always located in airports. Dedicated tourist cards offer payment options for both travel and shopping. When entering South Korea, carrying cash equivalent to $100 USD per day is advised, even if you possess foreign credit cards, as cash is a primary consideration for immigration.

It is recommended as a reliable payment method for tourists, particularly for those whose foreign bank cards may be intermittently declined. It is not accepted at cash-only venues such as some traditional markets.

Russian bank cards, especially UnionPay (even from banks like Rosselkhozbank - RSB), have limited acceptance, primarily for ATM withdrawals. Larger retailers like Lotte may decline standard Visa Gold but accept Visa Platinum. Smaller shops, cafes, and laundromats might accept the same cards without issue. Foreign cards typically have daily withdrawal limits (around 700,000 KRW) and transaction fees. For significant purchases, plan to split payments across days and locate compatible ATMs. Carrying local currency (KRW) is advisable, especially for markets and street food. For transportation, the T-money card is essential and can be topped up via the Wowpass app or convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7/11). The Wowpass tourist card is widely accepted but has reportedly failed in taxis on Jeju Island, making cash a safer bet there.

For multiple travelers, one Wowpass can be used, with additional T-money cards purchased separately for other family members. To obtain discounted fares for minors (under 18), a child's passport is required when applying for a youth tariff at a T-money top-up station. If seamless cashless payments are desired for everyone, consider that only one Wowpass can be integrated with a T-money account.

While foreign cards (like Kazakhstan-issued cards) work for payments, they cannot be used to top up T-money transportation cards directly; cash is often needed for T-money top-ups at kiosks. Carrying some local currency (KRW) is essential for small shops, rural areas, or Jeju Island, where card payments may not be supported.

CU cards primarily serve as transport cards. While both can be topped up, Wowpass allows for multi-currency top-ups via its app and terminals, which might be more convenient than CU's options. Not all terminals and shops universally accept both.

To pay for transit, users must top up the T-money balance via the Wowpass app or physical top-up machines located in convenience stores (7-Eleven, GS25, CU) or subway stations. The card should be tapped on the T-money reader on buses and subway turnstiles.

Funds can be loaded at terminals, with automatic conversion to KRW. T-money cards can have a child fare applied using a passport at top-up stations. If you have a foreign Visa card (from a non-Russian bank), it's widely accepted and might negate the need for a Wowpass.

If a card fails to read at the turnstile, seek assistance from metro staff. Ensure the card is properly placed and try alternative methods or contact support if persistent errors occur.

It is accepted at most terminals that process regular credit cards. T-Money is primarily for public transport, with limited acceptance in convenience stores only. Users can top up Wowpass terminals using cash or UnionPay cards.

This is an uncommon occurrence, as Wowpass transactions typically do not require a PIN.

However, it still does not allow online payments and is restricted to offline transactions.

Ensure you have sufficient funds loaded onto the card for daily travel, including transfers to and from the airport.

It cannot be linked to the Uber app directly.
