Shinkansen and Train Tickets in Japan: what actually matters to know

'Non-reserved' tickets allow travel on any train, but seating is not guaranteed. There are a limited number of non-reserved cars, and standing room only is a possibility during peak times. Reserved seats guarantee a specific seat on a specific train. Luggage can be stored in overhead racks, at the end of cars, or placed in front of your seat. It's advisable to book reserved seats for a more comfortable journey, especially during busy periods.

Some passes may require specific selection for voucher pick-up locations or methods. If unsure, consult the Japan-guide website or contact customer support for clarification on electronic voucher eligibility and redemption procedures.

While some tickets can be bought on the spot, booking ahead is recommended. Japan Rail Pass can be cost-effective for extensive travel. For transit in Shanghai, confirm terminal information and complete arrival cards in advance.

Standard prices apply for high-speed trains like Nozomi. Small savings (approx. 10%) can be found in 'kinken shops' (ticket resale shops) in Japan. JR Pass or standard ticket purchases are recommended for convenience.

You are not restricted to a specific departure time. However, if the ticket includes a reserved seat, it is valid only for that specific train and time.
