Using foreign bank cards

UnionPay ATM availability is very limited across India. Specifically, travelers in Goa have reported no successful discovery of ATMs accepting UnionPay cards.

When using Armenian bank cards in India, ATM withdrawals are generally functional. However, card payments, even in large retail outlets, may be declined. This could be due to a geographic restriction set by the issuing bank. It's advisable to check with your bank about potential regional blocks or to proactively unblock specific regions for usage in India.

Union Pay cards issued by RSHB (Russian Agricultural Bank) are generally not accepted for payments or ATM withdrawals in India. A few HSBC ATMs might accept them, but it's an unreliable method. RSHB Union Pay cards have been largely non-functional in India for approximately 1.5 years.

Travelers using Russian bank cards (e.g., RSB, Alfa-Bank Mastercard) for bookings in India via platforms like Booking.com may face payment issues if the hotel attempts to pre-charge the card. It is advisable to: 1. Contact the hotel directly to confirm payment methods and whether on-site payment (cash or alternative methods) is accepted. 2. Opt for bookings with 'pay at the property' options to avoid reservation cancellations. 3. Be aware that some hotels may only accept cashless payments.

Russian cards, especially UnionPay from Gazprombank or RSHB, have limited functionality in India, often restricted to ATM cash withdrawals. Availability of ATMs that accept these cards can be scarce, particularly in tourist areas like Goa. For payments, consider having cash or using cards from countries like Kazakhstan, Armenia, or Kyrgyzstan (Visa/Mastercard), which generally work for both payments and withdrawals.

Rosbank cards have limited usability in India. Cash withdrawals are only possible at HSBC ATMs (not HDFC), which are scarce, with none available in Goa. They can be found in Delhi and Mumbai. Online and terminal payments are not supported. Overall, Rosbank cards are largely impractical for use in India.

While Apple Pay may not function with Kazakhstan-issued cards in India, physical cards from banks like Freedom Bank are generally accepted in establishments with POS terminals, including supermarkets, malls, pharmacies, and petrol stations. It is advisable to carry some cash as a backup, but card payments are often feasible.
