You will need a 'Green Card' (international insurance policy). These can be purchased at kiosks near the border, which are typically open 24/7 and cost around 1000 Russian rubles. While border officials may not always check it, Belarusian traffic police can issue significant fines for its absence.

Consider alternative routes, such as via Roslavl if coming from Moscow, though this may add distance. It's advisable to check current queue conditions at border crossings like Kruglovka and Krasnaya Gorka, as they fluctuate. It is recommended to obtain the 'blue card' (vehicle insurance) in Russia before your trip, although it may be available at the border crossing.

If a policy expires while in the country, it cannot be extended for a shorter period (e.g., 5 days) at a reduced rate; one must visit a 'Belgosstrakh' office to purchase a new policy for the full minimum term.
