EES and Biometric Data in Bulgaria: what actually matters to know

Despite initial quick passage, a delay occurred due to biometric processing for several passengers. The bus and luggage were subsequently subjected to thorough scanning and inspection, with undeclared goods (clothing, produce) confiscated. The process, including baggage handling and passenger coordination, extended the border crossing time significantly (from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours). Border police checks also occurred on both sides, but were brief. Night buses are suggested to be calmer.

Passengers, including 40 migrant workers from Kyrgyzstan, underwent biometric data collection (fingerprints and photos). Luggage of every passenger was thoroughly inspected by hand. The vehicle itself was also inspected, with some parts disassembled. Travelers heading to Bulgaria, especially during the end of the season, should anticipate significant border control procedures.

Biometric data (fingerprints and photos) is now mandatory for all travelers. Traditional passport stamps are being replaced by electronic records. Travelers are advised that while the EES is electronic, requesting a physical stamp might mitigate potential issues arising from system glitches during this transitional period, especially concerning visa validity records.

Exit procedures are generally smoother and less time-consuming regarding biometrics. However, potential issues with foreign specialists' documents can still lead to significant delays for all passengers.
