Customs and Goods Import in Bulgaria: real experience from chats

Despite initial quick passage, a delay occurred due to biometric processing for several passengers. The bus and luggage were subsequently subjected to thorough scanning and inspection, with undeclared goods (clothing, produce) confiscated. The process, including baggage handling and passenger coordination, extended the border crossing time significantly (from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours). Border police checks also occurred on both sides, but were brief. Night buses are suggested to be calmer.

Passengers, including 40 migrant workers from Kyrgyzstan, underwent biometric data collection (fingerprints and photos). Luggage of every passenger was thoroughly inspected by hand. The vehicle itself was also inspected, with some parts disassembled. Travelers heading to Bulgaria, especially during the end of the season, should anticipate significant border control procedures.

Air travel allows 10 packs (1 block). Customs officers frequently inspect hand luggage for animal products and large quantities of medication (requires prescriptions). Non-EU citizens are subject to longer background checks regarding work permits.

Despite a common belief that checks occur only upon entry, a user reported their luggage being checked on the Bulgarian side when exiting in March.

It is common for items like dried sausages and cheese to be confiscated, with an official report filed. Passengers might also be questioned about the amount of foreign currency they are carrying. Exporting food products from Bulgaria appears to be less scrutinized than importing.
